DV5 Camshaft Chain Repair: When Do Valves Need Replacing Too?

A camshaft assembly replacement can be needed before the chain breaks

The DV5 uses a timing belt together with a chain between the camshafts. The short chain discussed here connects the intake and exhaust camshafts. The timing belt and water pump belong to a separate part of the repair scope and must be checked separately.

In a published Ford Focus DV5R repair record, the owner chose to replace the original 7 mm camshaft-chain system with an 8 mm configuration before failure. Inspection found the rocker arms and valves in good condition, so that part of the repair was not expanded. The workshop then cleaned the mating surfaces and fitted new oil seals during reassembly.^[1]

This explains the purpose of a kit containing the camshaft housing, two camshafts, chain, tensioner and sealing parts without valves, rocker arms or hydraulic tappets: the camshaft-drive assembly requires renewal while the existing valvetrain can be retained after inspection.

The seals also have a practical role. Where injectors and surrounding components are removed, the parts needed to reseal those interfaces belong on the purchase list. A missing oil seal or set of injector seals can delay reassembly even when the main components have arrived.

Rocker-arm wear changes the parts list

A chain complaint may bring the vehicle into the workshop, but the wear found during dismantling determines the final repair scope.

A Peugeot 5008 1.5 BlueHDi owner documented a repair at approximately 100,000 km following a brief chain noise on cold starts. Dismantling revealed abnormal wear on six intake-side rocker arms. The owner replaced those rocker arms, renewed all 16 hydraulic tappets as a precaution and installed an 8 mm camshaft-chain and housing assembly. The account does not report valve replacement, and the author states that the cylinder head was not removed.^[2]

This is an individual repair account without a complete published valve inspection report, rather than a standard workshop procedure. It nevertheless illustrates a distinct purchasing requirement: camshaft-chain work with rocker-arm and hydraulic-tappet replacement, without valve replacement being part of the recorded job.

The absence of valves from a kit describes its supply scope. It cannot replace an inspection decision or establish that valves will remain undamaged after a chain failure.

When the valves are worn, replacing the rocker arms is not enough

A separate Peugeot 508 DV5R repair record shows why the scope can extend further.

The vehicle arrived with a cold-start rattle. Once the camshaft housing was removed, inspection revealed substantial wear on three rocker arms and on the corresponding valves. With the customer’s agreement, the workshop added replacement of all valves and rocker arms alongside the 8 mm camshaft-chain assembly update.^[3]

Actual wear justified the valve replacement. The record does not describe bent valves caused by a snapped chain. That distinction matters when preparing a parts list: inspection can identify a need for valves even without a documented chain-break event.

Once valve replacement forms part of the repair, parts preparation extends from the upper camshaft assembly to more extensive cylinder-head work. This kit does not include the cylinder-head casting. If inspection finds that the cylinder head, valve seats or other areas need additional attention, the repair and supply scope must still be agreed separately.

The timing belt and water pump are a separate selection decision

The belt-and-water-pump configuration is not simply a higher level of the other kits. It extends the systems covered during the same repair.

A 2021 Citroën Berlingo 1.5 HDi arrived with a no-start condition. Inspection found a broken cam-to-cam chain and internal housing damage. The published repair list included a replacement housing, camshafts, 8 mm chain, rocker arms and hydraulic tappets, together with a timing belt, water pump and associated gaskets and seals.^[4]

A Peugeot 3008 was repaired while its chain was becoming slack, before it broke. The workshop also renewed the camshaft components, timing belt and water pump. It explained that combining the work while the engine was already dismantled reduced the need for another strip-down later. This was the workshop’s decision for that repair, not an unconditional replacement rule for every vehicle.^[5]

One job followed chain failure and the other preceded it. Both created a requirement to source the upper camshaft components and the belt-and-water-pump parts together.
